Myths, Stories, and Urban Legends of Shiloh County

Name - Location - Notes

  • Tall Pine Road Ghost - Tall Pine Road, Kimberly - Following the death of a businessman in 1980, many area residents have reported seeing headlights swerve off the road and hearing a crash at the accident location. Each time, no car or other physical evidence is seen. Some people have also reported hearing a man screaming in pain.
  • Ghost of John Murphy - Murphy's Lake, Kimberly - In the early 1800s the town drunk, John Murphy, was found drowned in a lake that his cabin was located on.  Even though he was known as the town drunk John was quite a good lumberjack and well liked so they decided to name the lake after him.  To this day campers who have camped on Murphy's Lake sometimes report the sounds of trees falling at night.  Some have also reported a distorted and pale figure walking into the lake.  Other reports include wet fingers touching the back of their necks followed by the smell of cheap booze.
