Trulit gardens

Trulit gardens was built in 1955 and is the largest housing project in the Shiloh County area. It is also the most notorious one. After white flight affected the city in the 60s the previously Polish and Italian housing complex was now Black and Puerto Rican. The tension between the  two ethnicities through the years and towards the late 70s gang wars erupted and random attacks against both ethnic groups were common.

In 1982 an elderly grandmother was beaten to death in the courtyard of one of the buildings. In 1986 a little girl was found strangled and thrown down a trash chute. In 1988 an investigative journalism piece made international news with crime rates through the roof and squalid living conditions.

In 1993 an SCFD ambulance dispatched to 732 Broad st for a child having difficulty breathing arrived on scene and the crew refused entry without a police escort due to ongoing violence in the area. Unfortunately the escort didn't arrive in time and the child died. Threats of violence towards first responders made it Trulit gardens a No go zone without Police escort. This again made national news

The Terrance P Wilkins houses named after the first Fort Shannon Housing commissioner were constructed in 1948 for returning GIs. In the 60s during a period of white flight the demographics were mainly Southern blacks moving north for opportunity. Crime rose as industry shut down in the mid 70s. In the late 80s a Hip Hop group. "River Boyz" gained national attention and the housing project was named in a lot of their songs. In the late 90s the group opened up a community center near the WIlkins houses.
