*I come in, hands shaking as I see an official looking envelope from the Saratoga state Board of Nursing. It's been a couple weeks since I sat for the exam and I've been applying to jobs at hospitals in the area. I got a conditional offer with Arcadia Community, and finally my results are here. I sit down at our kitchen table and open that envelope, dropping the rest of the mail on the table. 'Mr. Dunne, we would like to congratulate you on your successful completion of licensing requirements for your Saratoga State nursing license...'
I have to reread the line again. I passed. I double check the envelope and, sure enough, my nursing license is in the envelope. I fucking passed! I had put in my notice after I'd finished my exam and resolved to find a job. I definitely took a gamble but I'm absolutely elated to find out it was successful. The first thing I do, I text Aubrey. She's at work right now and probably won't answer but I want her to know immediately. I'll have to call my hiring manager tomorrow and tell them, then we can move forward from there with hiring.*
'Hey Aubs, I passed. Got my license'
*That should be enough to get the point across but for the rest of today, I'm celebrating. Everything else can come tomorrow.*

*As we arrive on scene, the new girl grabs a bunch of things from the truck. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason and I'm growing increasingly more unsettled by the moment. Everything with this run is Wrong and I don't like that feeling. I haven't dealt with any rural life since my parents and that hits me in an unexpected way. I climb out of the back, grabbing my ALS bag - if anything needs to be done before fire gets here it's going to be ALS. Unless it's bleeding control. But no kit is complete without bleeding control. I walk over towards the tractor, keying up my radio on the way over.*
"Medic 5 is on scene"
*I have no idea if anyone else has updated status over the radio for us and I see the new girl taking point on the run. She's the most junior of us and I'm the medic. I don't like pulling the medic is always senior crew but decisions largely fall to me as the highest level of care on the truck. It's frustrating and I feel like it's not my place to do anything about it but at the same time.. if I don't who will. The man in the tractor isn't handling being trapped very well and I can't say I blame him.*
'Hello sir, I'm Rory with the ambulance. I'm a paramedic and the fire department is on their way right now. They'll get you out.'
*He doesn't have any obvious airway issues, or breathing issues for that matter. He's definitely trapped, I see no obvious bleeding. I don't know about anything below.. roughly mid chest but I'm not seeing anything major to raise my alarm.*
-
*I'm unreasonably irritated already, since we're out in Kimberly. It's different and I don't like it. As we're toned out - I make my way to medic 5 and am beat by the rookie and am relegated to the back of the truck. This is not where I'm supposed to be going to a run and I'm even more thrown off by the change in routine. I'm irritated and irrationally angry now - it's Wrong and I hate the Wrongness of it. As I wait for us to start moving I flap my hand against my leg and bounce it, trying to regulate my sense of Wrongness.*
-
'Dunne's here'
-
'Yeah, our gear is fine. We'll take over once you have her out, just let us know how we can help.'
*Sparks and I stand over near the fire crew, our gear on the ground by the trunk of the car.*
-
"10-4 Dispatch."
*Literal moments later we're pulling on scene and it looks like fire is still working on extrication.*
"Medic 1 is on scene."
*I figure I may as well ask the fire officer on scene where he wants us, or if he wants us to hang around until they have the patient extricated and I step out, leaving Sparks in the cab of the truck.*
-
"Medic 1 is responding."
*The two of us head out towards the scene, given it's but a block or so away from the station should be a quick and simple response. There's no good reason to roll with a half supplied unit and we had to restock from last shift. And given it's likely going to be extended extrication, we shouldn't have been missed too badly.*
-
*It's a shock when someone is actually friendly towards me and I try to respond in kind.*
'Hey Logan. I can drive if you'd prefer.'
*I'm not really picky one way or the other but with my clinical shifts at the hospital and this, some time away from patient contact isn't a bad thing. Gives me some time to recharge and review things in my head. We're coming up on the end of my last semester and I'm still a touch behind on my capstone project. It's a a lot.
The two of us finish checking the ambulance out for the shift and everyone is toned out on an MVC with possible fatalities.*
'I suppose that means us as well then. If they're dispatching it as a possible fatality it's probably gonna be gristly.'
-
*I hate Aubrey's ridiculous schedule. It's almost impossible for me to get any sleep with her music going while she's working in the living room, all the lights on at all sorts of odd hours. I swear one of these nights I'm just going to fucking crash in my car rather than deal with her shit. Maybe I can get a cheap hotel for a night. With daydreams of a soft white bed in my head, I walk into the station to report in for shift. I'm among one of the last to arrive which is beginning to happen with disturbing regularity. At least I'm not late this time.*
-
*We head up to the lounge and I hear Breslin reading out a notice sent out for community paramedicine. With as close as I am to finishing my nursing degree and then sitting for boards, I'm really not interested. I could do home health nursing, basically the same job, and get paid so much better. It's not worth giving up time in the streets and besides, I like working with a partner. I'd probably go to one of the other companies in the city or even volunteer if we switched to entirely ALS flycars like some other parts of the country are.*
'I don't, Lieutenant. I get the feeling it will end up being reserved for punishment duty. I like working the streets. If I wanted to do longer term care like that, I'd just go to nursing and get paid much better for it.'
*I reply, taking a seat in one of the recliners in the lounge. With luck, we'll be here until the end of shift. There might be some perks to working with her after all and maybe she's not as prickly as some make her out to be.*

Overturned Tractor
Started by C. Aylward ·
ENGINE, RESCUE, MEDIC 5. Time Dispatched 10:04, Weather: CLEAR and 54F
*First call for the first shift at Kimberley. While it's not public, we all know here in dispatch why Station 1 is temporarily covering Kimberley. And also why ERT didn't spring for the urgent shipping with the new trucks to make sure these guys we're driving relics. While it's technically safe, no one wants to be on those dinosaurs. I key the station dispatch for Kimberley, which still hasn't been updated, it's part of the general refit, so the station speaker just repeats out what we used to put into the pagers, which are now deactivated, but still have the lovely Motorola Chirp.
I count the 12 seconds from the time the initial beep starts until the last chirp is out, which is definitely not shortened for punishment and punishment only. When the beeping stops, I key my station microphone*
"Engine 9, Rescue 9, Medic 5, overturned farm equipment, possible entrapment 16 Wandel Road."
Although the call notes state it, I don't exactly trust these old beasts to keep the tablets charged. When the first due vehicle calls in I read out the important details.
"10-4, be advised, caller reports their tractor has tipped, but they can't get out. Caller is not reporting any injuries, but is unsure, so we've started an ambulance as well."

High Speed MVA - Possible Fatality
Started by M. Price ·
ENGINE, LADDER, UNIT 22, EDO-1, 2x MEDIC, SHERIFF DEPUTIES poss. fatal MVA Lyons and Interstate Interchange.
Time: 10:41 Weather: Clear, 43F.
*A quiet morning on the phones means a bit of time for me to watch what's happening in Kimberley. We've all been waiting to see that douche Mathers removed, no one expected this though. Watching the call notes has made from some entertaining traffic. Just then, the phone rings. And another. And another. I pick up my line and answer.*
"911, what is your emergency?'
"Oh my god. There were these two cars. And they just. Oh my god."
"Where are you located ma'am?"
"I'm at the interchange in Fort Shannon, well I'm on Lyons, but, the car just flew off."
"What do you mean?" There is obviously an MVA, but more details are needed. I'm hoping someone else is having more luck on their line.*
"They, there were two cars, and they crashed, and flew over the edge. One came off and landed on another car. I can't. I can't go over to check, but the car below. There's no way someone could survive."
"Okay, you're right next to the fire station, I'm going to send them right away. Did both cars come off?"
"No, there's still one up there, I can see, smoke? There's smoke on the highway."
"Okay, we're sending help."
*I key the alarm for the station and see the others populating calls notes confirming my caller's information. The car on the highway isn't burning, but it's certainly smoking. One says street racers, and another says he thinks he saw a lone woman in the crushed car, but is confident the crash killed her, even though he can't see her.*
LADDER, ENGINE, SHIFT UNIT 22, MEDIC, MEDIC, EDO-1 LYONS AVE MV with injuries.
*As medics radio response, I key up.*
"Possible fatalities, injuries. Unknown about car on interstate interchange still."
*On confirmation I switch to sheriff radio.*
"Need available units to respond to a possible fatal MVA on Lyons ave underneath the interchange. Possible involved vehicle on the highway still. Traffic division also to respond."
*Knowing they're running commercial enforcement only a few miles away, I activate their units to respond as well.*

MVA With Injuries
Started by H. Goodricht ·
Engine 12, Squad 1, Medic 5, Medic 1, 2x Sheriff Units.
Dekalb & N 1st. Tbone collision, minor injuries reported.
"911 what is your emergency?"
"I've just been t-boned. I don't think I'm hurt, but I can't get out of my car. The door is stuck."
"Okay, where are you located right now?"
"I think it's... Dekalb and N1st."
"Okay, help is on the way." I say, as I start entering the information and activate the tones at SCFD Station 1 for resources. "Is anyone hurt?"
"It's just me in here, I'm okay, but I think the other driver is pretty beat up. He's got blood on his forehead, and, it looks like there's someone in the back seat too."
"Can you call out to him?"
"No, I mean, I don't think so, his music is still playing pretty loud."
"Okay, the fire department is on the way. Goodbye."
*I key the call information and activate the tones for medics 1 and 5. If everything is working right, they should be activating at the station right now, followed by the computerized dispatch voice.
Engine 12, Squad 1, Medic 5, Medic 1 respond to Dekalb Street and North First Avenue for Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries.
I toggle the microphone for sheriff dispatch.
"ERT to units in the area of Fort Shannon. MVA with injuries at Dekalb and N 1st Ave, two units to respond to scene."
*I sit back and wait a minute to see if any units respond, or if the system truly isn't working and we need to go back to the old system, again. I hope it works.*
