Southriver Neighborhoods

Pearl Basin

Originally known for its the freshwater muscles that could be found on the shore of the river. This neighborhood was originally settled by German and Scandinavian immigrants who worked in the manufacturing and maritime industry in the early 1900s. The neighborhood was a stronghold for German and Scandinavians until after the second world war, When the manufacturing industry started to pickup in Clinton many long term residents moved closer to the new plants opening in Clinton.

In the early 1950s the first Hispanic people moved into the neighborhood. Mainly Puerto Ricans and then Dominicans and Mexicans flocked to the neighborhood many working in the marine terminal and local manufacturing. The neighborhood took a hit in the late 70s when J.E Thompson shut down a significant part the Fort Shannon Factory. In the mid 2000s there was a slight resurgence due to a tortilla factory opening up and the neighborhood has become known for its rich Latin culture and vibrant food scene

Trulit Gardens

Trulit Gardens public housing complex was built in 1962 in South West Fort Shannon. Originally intended for employees of the nearby transportation hubs and factories. within 10 years white flight occurred and the neighborhood surrounding the complex quickly declined. In the early 1982 the complex made national news when an 8 year old girl was fatally shot in a driveby shooting. In the early 90s the complex was a no go zone for Emergency service crews which again made news after an elderly lady died when the EMS crew was waiting for a PD escort. Although crime has been on the decline in recent decades the complex and surrounding areas are still considered high crime areas.

Five Points

Five points has historically been the worst neighborhood in Shiloh county dating back to the early 19th century. Parents in Shiloh county have always warned their children about the neighborhood. Often telling them they may not come back from there. Originally home to sailors and smugglers from the maritime field. During prohibition Five Points was the focal point for alcohol smuggling from Canada. The intersection of King and Prince is known as the crossroads. The crossroads is a coveted position for local organized crime. There has been much bloodshed over that intersection.
