Checking myself in the mirror one last time, I straighten my tie and mourning band on my badge, before getting in my car to head to the funeral. The engine crew out of the lieutenant's station is driving the engine in the funeral procession, but I'll make up, what I'm sure will be a large contingent, of uniformed mourners walking. Unlike most though, I saw the deceased, and I saw the carnage. It's my duty to walk to his final resting.

Parking at the station, I climb aboard the bus from ERT, taking uniformed members to the funeral site, and take a seat near the front. Removing my cover as I sit down, I rest it in my lap, and pick a piece of lint off.

Damnit I hate funerals.

Ratta tat tat, ratta tat tat tat tat goes the sound of my drum as I tap on it repeatably with my drumsticks.  As part of the Department's Pipe and Drum band I am with the other members who are tuning their instruments and practicing their beats like I am.  Any moment now we are going to be told to get in line for the procession and I am ready for it.  Though we've done this sort of thing plenty of times for parades it's rare that we do this for funerals and I can tell by the looks on the faces of others that none of us, including me, want to mess this up.  We're all doing our best to ensure our instruments sound right and our marching uniforms are down to perfection from our shoes to our kilts to the patches on our tunics.  Nothing is being overlooked here and I have checked myself countless times to ensure nothing is out of place to be complained about on my account.

Meeting at the ERT building ahead, I've extended to a few of the staff who were attending, that would not get parking permits, a ride invitation, for the most part, everyone carpooled off elsewhere, but the intern, still new and not knowing anyone got to ride with the boss.

I wait in my office, in my Class A uniform, sans tunic and hat, both hung on the coatrack in the corner, to avoid wrinkles. It always felt weird taking off the tunic, as we don't really issue shirts for underneath the high collars. It's a free for all. For me, that means a black underarmor. Waiting for Kristen to join, I notice the polish on my left shoe is a little off, so I fix that up, and then check the badge on my jacket one more time with the mourning band.

Having not been issued a Class A uniform I elect to go with a conservative black dress with heels. My hair is down. As I walk to the commisioner's office I put in my gold hoop earrings.

Standing as I hear the door open, I see Kristen walk in and smile. A uniform wouldn't do her justice. At all.

'Good morning.' I say, reaching over and grabbing my tunic. Putting it on, I pull the belt together and clasp it while talking. 'For what today is, I'm making the best of it. Good choice not trying to hobble together a respectable dress uniform out of what's been issued. You're better off this way. Work uniforms don't always clean up so nice.' After checking my tunic in the mirror, I pull on my cap. 'You ready to go?'

*giving Engine 1 a final rubdown i step back looking at my meticulous work for a second  its a sparkling spotless rig probably the cleanest its ever been barring the day the department received it from the factory that built it  before i head to where i had parked my truck, opening the back door i retrieve my class As also meticulously immaculately cleaned as engine 1s already at staging with the procession its mainly a waiting game yes im an escort but ill be behind a couple of brass and cheif cars from 14s house then its engine 1 followed by whatever herse or engines carrying lt white its still early so i take the time to get dressed into my class A's and then ill just wait in engine 1 till its time to roll seeing as i volunteered to drive in the procession as sombody has to*

*Walking in I see the commissioner smiling at me*

'Thank you sir, I can clean up pretty well when I want.

*I say as I do a little spin for him*

'You look incredible sir.'

'You ready to go?'

'Yes I am.'

I lead Kristen out first, heading down to the unmarked Tahoe parked in the marked reserved parking out front. Normally I use the door handle to unlock, but today, as a proper gentleman, I unlock the doors first so Kristen can get in. Climbing in, I turn the radios down, music and dispatch. Neither completely off, but enough to carry on a conversation. I look over to Kristen as I pull out of the parking lot towards the church, and try not to stare too low.

"So, not a great start to the first part of your internship, I guess they didn't tell you funerals are part of the gig too."

Merging into the main flow of traffic, I get stuck behind an eager driver who did a better job at spotting the emergency equipment than I ever could, crawling at exactly 1mph below the limit. The badge on my jacket isn't a police one buddy. If you speed, I can too.
