2x Sheriff, reports of stolen forklift from Home Depot Essex, last seen headed Northwest to Phoxlind Hts Ave. Respond SCSD

'911 where is your emergency?'

"Essex Home Depot! Someone just fucking stole my forklift!"

"Tell me exactly what happened?"

"MY FUCKING FORKLIFT. I WAS PUSHED OFF IT AND THEY HEADED OUT OF THE LOT, TOWARDS PHOXLIND HEIGHTS! JESUS ARE YOU DUMB"

"Sir, I needed to confirm. What kind of forklift is it?"

"I don't know, fucking yellow, with forks."

"Like a warehouse forklift?"

"Jesus lady." and he hangs up.

I dispatch out the call while I try to call back and confirm information. 

Be advised, additional unit to respond to home depot to check with reporting person. Call disconnected.

*hearing the call go out i turn and open the cad and read the cad notes*

"really a forklift a fucking forklift"

*grabbing my mic i key up*

"209 ERT Assign me to the call i'll be enroute to the home depot, and Can you start any available traffic units as well"

*releasing my PTT i put my mic down in my holder and turn my lights on and start heading towards the home depot in essex*

'Well first a forgotten alarm at a school and now this, its going to be a interesting day'

Hearing the call go out, I detach the mic from the center console as I hold the PTT and speak into it.

"252 ERT, attaching to call. Heading to Phoxlind Heights to conduct search"

I place it back as I turn the emergency lighting slider to 2, driving out of the alley I was parked at and placing the soda cup I was holding in a cup holder.

I move through traffic, using the airhorn constantly and toggling sirens while at intersections.

*hearing 252 key up i give a sigh of relief knowing i actually have a traffic guy being assigned, Grabbing my mic again i key up*

"209, 252 Direct i'm three minutes out from the home depot when i make contact i'll get you a better description of what we are looking for"

*releasing my mic i clip it back into the holder on the center console as i cross the town lines into Essex*

Crossing into Northern Ft. Shannon, I decide to pick up the pace by taking some side streets due to the intense traffic on the main avenue. Almost there. Hope it isn't gone when I'm there.

*Arriving at the Home depot i pull up front of the store i grab my mic and key up*

"209 ERT show me out at the Home depot"

*releasing my ptt on the mic i place it back in its holder and get out and head inside, Entering into the building i get met by the Manger of the store*

'Sir I'm the Manger of the store are you here to help find our forklift'

'Yes i am, can we head to your office so i can talk with you and the caller'

'Oh yes right this way Officer'

*following the manger to his office we enter and there's an employee sitting in the office*

'Okay sir, I'm deputy Rogers with the shiloh county sheriffs office, who was driving the forklift when it was taken'

'I was some maniac came up and pushed me off of it and took off he nearly ran me over with the damn thing'

'Okay Sir what color was it what brand did have a plate yes or no'

'It was Yellow and i think it was a yale we have a couple different brands here  that we use and no it doesn't have a plate on it'

'Okay sir what did the suspect look like'

'Uhhh like 6'2 White was wearing a brown tank top  and a beanie'

'Okay sir and whats your name'

'Jamal Sanders'

'Okay thank you sir do you guys have any footage of this incident and if you can you pull it up well i go give this info to my officers looking for the forklift'

'Yes we do we will get it puled up'

*i give a nod and walk out of the room and key up my portable*

*releasing my PTT i head back into the office as they get the footage pulled up*

Before I can key up my miic, another unit calls up.

"252 ERT, attaching to call. Heading to Phoxlind Heights to conduct search"

"Copy 209, 252. Advise if additionals are required."

L:istening to the traffic back and forth between the two units, I alwayss think how much more interesting law dispatch is than fire. More radio chatter. Trucks, they're boring. 

"209 ERT show me out at the Home depot"

"Copy that, caller should be out front, unsure any further. Not answering call backs."

I copy the info down and when it's released, I hit send on the BOLO, sending it to all the MDTs in the county. I key over the channel for general broadcast. 

"All units, all units, BOLO issued by SCSD Two Zero Nine for a Yellow Yale Brand Forklift, no license plate. Operated by a white male, 6'2", brown tank top and beanie. Last seen leaving Home Depot in Essex, Northwest bound on Phoxlind Heights."

Arriving at Phoxlind Heights, I head onto the main avenue as I drive down the avenue towards Oxnard city limits, now switching my emergency lighting slider to OFF as I stop using the airhorn and sirens while going through intersections.

While pulling up at the intersection of Phoxlind Heights Ave. and 6th Street N, I spot the stolen vehicle stopping in the middle of the intersection after a traffic light going red, having traffic from the other direction go around him. Many of the drivers begin honking while going past, and the driver starts shouting obscenities.

"252 ERT, I have eyes on the BOLO - intersection of Phoxlind Heights Ave and 6th Street North in Ft. Shannon, suspect headed SE toward Oxnard. Stopped in the middle of an intersection. Requesting additional"

*Hearing 252 transmitting the request for an Additional i head out to my car and get in and grab my mic*

"209 ERT i'm heading to assist 252 can we get moved to a montiored tac channel please"

*releasing my ptt i flip my lights and sirens on and head to 252's location, Arriving on scene i mark myself on scene via cad and hop out of my vehicle*

'Clarkson you got lead on this your traffic'

'Right.. start helping me stop traffic, foot and vehicular alike. We don't want any property damage, much less injuries, on our hands. Use PA.'

I'd switch my emergency lighting slider to 3 and press Yelp occasionally, grabbing the mic from the center console and switching it to PA mode.

"CLEAR THE INTERSECTION. DO NOT DRIVE ONTO IT. PEDESTRIANS, BACK UP INTO A SAFE SPOT WHERE THE FORKLIFT CAN'T REACH YOU."

Traffic starts slowing down and then coming to a halt. Some started honking. Expected from Ft. Shannon drivers, I guess. Eventually, the intersection was clear. 

I move up ahead, parking my car facing straight towards the intersection on the crosswalk. If anything, he'll hit the bullbar.

I swing open the driver's side door as I hold onto the mic, elbow on the car roof.

"DRIVER OF THE FORKLIFT, TURN OFF THE VEHICLE AND STEP OUT WITH YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR. THIS IS THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT."

*getting all the traffic cleared i pull my taser out of my holster and point it at the driver of the fork lift*

'Sir turn the forklift off throw the keys to the side and slowly step off with your hands in the air where we can see them'

'Why should i'

'Sir step off the forklift or you are going to get Tased'

"This is your last warning. Take the easy way and comply, or you'll be tased. Being tased is very painful, I'll tell you that."

Even after trying to convince him, he seems to refuse. I turn off the PA and attach the mic back onto the center console as I move my hand onto my sidearm holster, not drawing it.

'Seems like we'll have to drag him out. Can easily run up to the forklift and do that. That thing's about as fast as my grandmother.'

*stepping up closer to the forklift i point my taser at the subject and squeeze the trigger firing the prongs and they land true and the guy falls out of the seat and on to the ground*

*im just honestly douing my thing on a mealbreak,when i hear a yelp and a somewhat close PA*' the hell?' * i glance down at my MDT as i hear the PA again*

'there close, my meals done may as well roll' *keying my mic as i fire up 251 i leave where i parked and roll to the intersection in question*

 

"control,from 251,was on a meal break nearby,show me responding and on scene,there like a block or two away" * tappig my siren to scatter folks so i can get my car nearby i stop,oppsite of  209 across the intersection,step outta my car and walk up*

'TASER TASER TASER, go in for cuffs Clarkson'

I run over, hand on holster still as I move my left arm up against his back, holding him down. I proceed by moving his arms around his back, subsequently reaching around the back of my duty belt for a pair of handcuffs as I slide them out - clicking them onto the perp's wrist.

After all that's done, I begin to pat him down. I find a pocket knife and his wallet containing his ID identifying him as a Liam Chapman. I take both items, handing them off to Dempsy who just arrived.

'Should've opted for the easier way, Chapman.'

I stand up and begin escorting him back to my car, swinging open the rear left door as I place him inside after reading him his rights. Please don't shit yourself in the back of my car.

I close the door afterwards, opening the driver's side door as I move closer to the center of the intersection slowly with my door still open. Putting my car in Neutral, I turn to look at the others while still in the seat. 

'Okay, someone call county tow and move that thing to the side of the road. Think we're clear now, but it's good to search the vehicle aswell.'

"ERT Copies, all units area of Phoxline Heights Ave at North 6th, we have a request for backup on a stolen forklift."

"209 ERT i'm heading to assist 252 can we get moved to a montiored tac channel please"

"Affirmative 209, all units responding, transmit on Tactical North."

Updating the call notes as I go along, I listen to see what happens. 

"Control from 251, was on a meal break nearby, show me responding and on scene, they're like a block or two away."

En route and on scene? Two blocks in a second. Methinks someone forgot to tell dispatch they were responding.

"Affirmative 251, Tactical North please."

 

After a few minutes, no further traffic. Must still be negotiating with him. No orange panic alerts, and no further radio traffic. Great. Guess that means more coffee time for me.

"252 ERT, perp's been apprehended. Taser deployed by 209. Requesting one tow and an ambulance.

No additional injures or property damage caused."

I close the driver's side door as I drive my car off the middle of the intersection, parking somewhere safe as I get back out.

*Hearing Clarkson Call for Two and Ambulance i head over to the tow truck and check it over for any damages*

'Clarkson, Demspy forklift is fine'

'Got it.'

After moving the forklift to the side of the road, the flow of traffic resumes. Curious bystanders start dispersing and moving back onto the sidewalk. Waiting about for a few minutes, a SCSD tow truck and an ambulance show up - just as requested.

The EMTs come up to my car and start asking me about the situation. I give them a straight-forward, no bullshit explanation of the whole incident. After conducting a field assessment on the guy and concluding he's alright, I begin to transport him away.

The tow loads the forklift up and begins heading away, the scene being finally clear now.
